The Coffee Table (Part 2)

Well I tried my hand at staining for the first time and the coffee table was my first victim (and probably my last)!  At first it was fun since it provided such quick results and I love anything that can be transformed quickly.  But then the stain took FOREVER to dry – I’m talking daaaaaays!   After some sanding and re-staining and fixing the un-even color with some watered down brown paint, I was accepting of the end product.  I don’t love it but I don’t hate it.  Just kind of so-so, but have decided to “live” with it for a while.  So here’s a few pics of the table in it’s current state.  For a refresher, here's where this all started with part 1 of the coffee table.

The Message Center

Well let me just start off by saying that some projects definitely should just live in my head. Recently, I discovered my need to have an "office space" at home. The hubby has his office - a whole bedroom dedicated to him and his studies (desk, computer, filing, bookshelves, dry erase boards, lounging chairs, etc). I've been trying to share the computer and desk space for the last year but have come to realize that some spaces should not be shared. The office, as it turns out, is one of them for us. Many other couples need two bathroom sinks - for us- we need two desks in completely separate rooms. The bathroom sink I could care less about and will happily share it.

So while the hubby was out of town for a few days, I decided to claim a piece of real estate somewhere in our house. I mean, really! It's a large 3 bedroom house - surely I could find somewhere to set up shop. Since our living room is larger than life, we have it split into a living room and dining room. The house has a formal dining room that we turned it into a study room. Funny thing about the study room is that not a lot of studying goes on in there. Actually, for most of the last year, no one has been in there. So I decided it would be the perfect place to create my new office. So I spent an hour or so moving around all the furniture pieces until I had a layout that was functional and pretty. And an added bonus - I can see the TV in the kitchen while sitting at my new desk - score!! The remote even works from my desk. I knew it was meant to be!

So with my new office in place, I envisioned a really large message board of sorts that could be self-standing and lean against the wall. I would have 2 sections for push-pin stuff and a dry erase board built in. The location was right in front of a heat vent on the bottom section of the wall, so I even took that into account when drawing up my building plans and taking measurements. So off to the store to buy my wood.

This project was a perfect opportunity to do my first 45 degree cuts with miter bob since I was assembling the message board like a picture frame. I put it all together with wood glue, some staple gun action, a few nails, primed and painted, and inserted the message board stuff. Yet, once I put it into my new office space, I didn't like the way the room "felt". It seemed too clutter-y or something. Tried a few more locations, gave it a few days. Then I just resigned to the fact that this great idea was better in my head than in real life. So, it now lives in the basement with no use and no purpose. Oh well!

I included the pictures just for fun!
